For my second review on the 2015 LEGO Minecraft sets, i have The Nether Fortress (21212)It is the largest wave set. It contains 571 pieces and will be available from August 1st. The set retails at $79.99. This set was sent to me by the LEGO CEE Team.
The LEGO Minecraft border at top and The Nether Fortress artwork below are the same as in my previous review of The Snow Hideout (21212) The instructions include closeups of set details as well as the advertised alterate. Six bags, numbered 1 through 3, are included in this box’s contents. Three loose plates and an instruction book are also included in the box.
The set includes three minifigures and a few buildable mobs, including Steve, Alex, the Zombie Pigman, and a Blaze.
Steve is the same minifigure that we’ve seen in many previous sets with the blue torso and purple legs. He also has a a diamond helmet and diamond breastplate, as well a diamond pickaxe. There’s nothing special about him.
Alex is Steve’s alternate default skin. It has a green body with brown legs. She also has pixilated print on both her torso as well as her head. She also wears a tassel-shaped helmet, with a diamond crown but no collar. Alex also has a sword made of diamond that she can use to fight the mobs at fortress.
The LEGO Minecraft sets’ Zombie Pigman minifigure is the most detailed. It has pink skin and printing that resembles rotting flesh and bones. It also comes with a golden sword. This is the only set to contain this particular minifigure so if you want an army of them, it’ll probably get pretty expensive.
The Blaze is a mob that’s only found in The Nether Fortress. It is created with two modified 1×1 bricks with studs on 4 sides, aka the Travis Brick, with yellow nozzles in each stud. It has detailed printing that shows it burning.
The final is the Ghast, a brick-built mob mostly made of tiles on its outside. The Ghast contains a stud shooter that shoots fireballs from its mouth. What’s unique about this mob is that there different printed 2×4 tiles to change out the Ghast’s face, which by the way looks very accurate to the game. The bottom of the Ghast has eight tentacles made of 1×2 plate with clip. This is slightly incorrect as the Ghast has nine tentacles in this game.
The Nether Fortress, a large structure that Minecraft veterans will recognize, is the Nether Fortress. On the left side, you have the Nether Portal which uses a nice trans-purple window panel piece that was used in only one other set, the Ultra Agents AntiMatter’s Portal Hideout (70172).
Adjacent to the portal is a lava waterfall that is made mostly of orange 2×2 bricks with some 1×1 trans-orange bricks here and there. The lava can be made by pulling on a Glowstone brick that is on the mountain’s side.
As you progress to the right of the Nether Fortress, there is a bridge walkway up top and at the end of the tower, there’s a chest filled with treasure waiting for Steve and Alex including a golden sword and a couple of diamonds.
Halfway through, you’ll find a few hinges which allow you to fold the set into a “L”You can make it look different by using the/right angle shape depending on your preference.
You’ll notice throughout the set that there are decorative builds such as Nether warts, Nether quartz, and mushrooms to give the set some video game authenticity. You can also see some 2×2 plates with jumpers in various places where you can put those elements.
The LEGO Minecraft: The Nether Fortress (21212).It is a decent set that Minecraft fans would be interested in purchasing. You can use some of the useful elements and features in other builds. The set’s best feature is the minifigures and mob builds. The downside is that it might be difficult to find what you really want due to the $79.99 price tag. The Blaze-spawner is one of the things I thought would make a great addition. You can’t really have a Blaze without the spawner, right?
Overall, it’s a great set with lots of dark red bricks. It’s just a little too expensive for 571 pieces. If you can get it at a discounted price in the future, it’s worth picking up. Will any of you be picking up this set when it’s available next week?
